The Makanda Project

The Makanda Project is a 13 piece group, based in Boston with some members living in New York. It was formed to play previously unheard compositions by the late Makanda Ken McIntyre (1931-2001). Dr. McIntyre was a brilliant composer and multi-instrumentalist, whose music stretches boundaries in unique ways while remaining firmly rooted in the traditional elements of jazz. He performed on important recordings with Eric Dolphy and Cecil Taylor early in his career, and made several albums as a leader, but remained under-recognized during his lifetime, partly because much of his energy was devoted to his work as an educator. When he passed away unexpectedly in 2001, he left behind around 350 compositions that had not been recorded or, in most cases, heard in public. For the past 10 years, the Makanda Project has been exploring that body of work. This will be The Makanda Project's first Washington DC appearance (May 21, 2016 @6:30pm). Tickets can be purchased on this website by "Clicking Event Registration" and then clicking the "Makanda Project". More information
